Finally, Spring is here in Michigan, and so are all those seasonal chores that come with the winter thaw. You may have a battle plan, or perhaps you’re already feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the tasks ahead. There certainly is some work involved, but once you get going that clean, crisp spring air should keep you motivated. Some jobs, like raking up dead leaves, or pruning the bushes are obvious, but what about your home’s exterior–where do you even start?
1. Roof and rain gutters
While it’s probably best to leave these second-story jobs to the professionals, it’s the first place to start. A roof inspection from the ground will provide some tell-tale signs–like thinning granules, discoloration, lose tiles, moss, or sagging areas–as to whether or not you need to call a roofer. You can also clean your rain gutters without ever climbing a ladder, as a variety tools are available. However, if your home is in need of rain gutter repair, or you have specialized gutters that are covered, you’ll want to call a professional .
2. Use a powerwasher
These are awesome – although make sure to check the object you are cleaning can withstand the amount of pressure you are using. Clean the outside of your home, the driveway, sidewalks, and decks–just about anything outside. You won’t necessarily need soap, but specialized soaps are available.
3. Wash the windows
The outside of the windows are covered by an opaque layer of winter grime.
4. Scrub the thresholds
This is often forgotten in the hustle of home maintenance tasks. Take time in the spring to sweep and scrub the threshold of your home – after all, it’s the first thing people see when they come to visit!
5. Clean, repair, or replace screens
It’s easy! You can buy a spline roller and new spline–that rubber thing that holds the screen in–at the hardware store. Use a little water and dish soap to clean the screens. They can be cleaned in a bathtub, or simply rinsed off with the garden hose.
Ready to relax? You’ve got one more chore:
6. Clean that grill!
It’s always best to the clean the grill at least once before that series of summer BBQs.
