Spring weather can be beautiful, especially in Canton. But it can also reveal the damaging effects of a harsh, cold winter. Wood reacts to moisture and temperature changes, often causing nails and screws to work loose, which threatens the integrity of your home’s exterior. The transition between an icy winter and a hot, muggy summer is the time your home is likely to complain of these ailments–it’s a good time for some preventative medicine.
5 Preventative Steps and Checks:
1 – Soffit
The soffit is the wood or other material that covers the underside, or eave, of your roof. Any loose piece should be fixed right away. Birds and bees love to nest in these areas of your home, and one loose piece of soffit can lead to more damage in a windstorm.
2 – Trees and Bushes
Check your home for potential damage caused by nearby trees and other landscaping elements. A tree branch rubbing against the house can damage the roof, the siding, or even break a window. Prune on a regular basis, especially in the spring and again in late summer.
3 – Rain Gutters
Rain gutters are sure to be clogged with dead leaves and other debris after winter, and your system may have also suffered damage from ice formations. Make sure they are intact, free of debris, and properly directing water away from your home’s foundation.
4 – Foundation
Check both indoors and out for cracks in your home’s foundation. You aren’t necessarily looking for structural damage, but you’re looking for pathways that water and insects may take to invade your home–seal these up. However, in light of Michigan’s recent 4.2 earthquake, if you find a suspicious crack in your home’s masonry, you may want to call a professional.
5 – Roof
Dips and loose shingles should be obvious signs your roof needs repairing, but did you know that discoloration and loose granules are signs as well?
