Radiant Heat & Its Effect On Your Home

Here’s something you’ve already noticed that is most noticeable in the summer: your home starts out cool in the morning, usually stays decently comfortable during the day, then gets hotter as the day cools and the sun goes down (especially on the second floor of two story homes).

Why does it get hotter at the end of the day?

It’s called radiant heat.

You need attic insulation to provide the buffer against heat exchange, but without a second line of defense, the same insulation that protects you is storing up heat. That stored heat moves down into your home, intensifying in the evening, and making your air conditioner work harder even though outside temperatures have cooled.

Creating a Second Line of Defense

In the winter, the effect is reversed. NASA solved this problem with a reflective foil that bounces heat back to its source. It has been available for home use for years but is not yet widely known.

In home applications, your best energy efficiency is achieved by supplementing your attic insulation with a radiant barrier.

In the summer the radiant barrier bounces solar energy coming into your attic back outside. In the winter it bounces the heat you’re paying to produce back into your home.
